Obama’s call to close Vatican embassy is ‘slap in the face’ to Roman Catholics

By Cheryl K. Chumley-The Washington Times Tuesday, November 26, 2013

The Obama administration, in what’s been called an egregious slap in the face to the Vatican, has moved to shut down the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See — a free-standing facility — and relocate offices onto the grounds of the larger American Embassy in Italy.

The new offices will be in a separate building on the property, Breitbart reported.

And while U.S. officials are touting the relocation as a security measure that’s a cautionary reaction to last year’s attacks on America's facility in Benghazi, several former American envoys are raising the red flag.

It’s a “massive downgrade of U.S.-Vatican ties,” said former U.S. Ambassador James Nicholson in the National Catholic Reporter. “It’s turning this embassy into a stepchild of the embassy to Italy. The Holy See is a pivot point for international affairs and a major listening post for the United States, and … [it’s] an insult to American Catholics and to the Vatican.”

Mr. Nicholson — whose views were echoed by former envoys Francis Rooney, Mary Ann Glendon, Raymond Flynn and Thomas Melady — also called the justification for closing the existing facility a “smokescreen,” Breitbart reported.

Pope’s meets with the father of liberation theology; Vatican media praises the Peruvian priest

Dominican priest Gustavo Gutierrez suffered

Pope’s meets with the father of liberation theology; Vatican media praises the Peruvian priest

Pope Francis' September 11 meeting with Dominican Father Gustavo Gutierrez was an informal one, held in the in the pope's residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae, and not listed on his official schedule., reports the Catholic News Service. However the news that Pope Francis had received the 85-year old Peruvian priest, who is widely considered the father of liberation theology, has excited interest far beyond the Vatican's walls.

The prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of
the Faith, Archbishop Gerhard L. Muller is a supporter
 of Gutierrez.
During the 1990s, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith conducted a lengthy critical review of Father Gutierrez's work, and required him to write and rewrite articles clarifying some of his theological and pastoral points.

But within a single week in early September 2013, the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, published an interview with Father Gutierrez, an article by the theologian himself, and two articles praising his work -- one of them by the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Gerhard L. Muller.

Following years of Vatican criticism of liberation theology under John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, these events might seem to indicate a reversal of policy under Pope Francis. It would be more accurate to say they represent the fruit of a long and painful process, through which the church has clarified the nature of its commitment to the world's poor today.

Top Vatican bank managers resign after Monsignor's arrest

By Philip Pullella
VATICAN CITY | Mon Jul 1, 2013 7:18pm EDT
(Reuters) - Two top managers of the scandal-plagued Vatican bank resigned on Monday following the arrest of a high-ranking cleric with close ties to the financial institution, in the latest of a string of embarrassments for the Holy See.

Director Paolo Cipriani and deputy-director Massimo Tulli stepped down three days after the Vatican was rocked by the arrest of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, who is accused of plotting with two other people to smuggle 20 million euros into Italy from Switzerland.

Ernst von Freyberg, a German [with Krupp-Thyssen ties -AK] who earlier this year became president of the bank, officially known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), will assume the role of bank director until a permanent replacement is appointed.

New pope 2013: Jorge Bergoglio, Argentine cardinal, elected Pope Francis

By ASSOCIATED PRESS | 3/13/13 2:25 PM EDT Updated: 3/13/13 4:53 PM EDT
VATICAN CITY — Argentine Jorge Bergoglio was elected pope Wednesday and chose the papal name Francis, becoming first pontiff from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.

of Argentina, appears on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica

the Vatican on March 13. (Photo: Reuters)

A stunned-looking Bergoglio shyly waved to the crowd of tens of thousands of people who gathered in St. Peter's Square, marveling that the cardinals had had to look to "the end of the earth" to find a bishop of Rome.

(PHOTOS: Cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel to elect a new pope)

Bergoglio had reportedly finished second in the 2005 conclave that produced Benedict — who last month became the first pope to resign in 600 years.

After announcing "Habemus Papum" — "We have a pope!" — a cardinal standing on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday revealed the identity of the new pontiff, using his Latin name.

The 76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests.

Arend Lammertink Shares His Views on the OPPT

Arend Lammertink

A reader writes:

Folks, attached below are two comments, submitted in answer to this article, I thought you might find interesting. Arend Lammertink appears to have done some intriguing research, which supports OPPT, given his article, the one he links us to in his comments. I find it interesting to find these intriguing nuggets, filed in answer to negative articles on OPPT. If interested, read on...

The following is a somewhat negative article about the OPPT [he'll come around eventually]:
OPPT or Co-opted? Look Before You Leap
by Zen Gardner
March 7th, 2013

http://www.zengardner.com/oppt-or-co-oped-look-before-you-leap/

Arend Lammertink on 03/08/2013 at 9:04 AM said in response to the above article:

Thanks for sharing your views [zengardener.com]. I must say that, at first, I didn’t like the idea of some trustees apparently making bold claims and decisions for me in something called a trust. However, I changed my mind.

I have done quite some research on the legal system, and wrote an article about the essential difference between Common Law and Roman-type civil law, which is the authority under which the legal system operates. The civil law system is organised top-down and thus you have by definition a ruler. The common law system is organised bottom-up and it derives its authority directly from We, The People:

http://www.tuks.nl/wiki/index.php/Main/TheFascinatingHistoryOfCivilLawVersusDivineCommonLaw

Now, my research shows that under current international Roman-type Civil Law, virtually ALL Kings or Kingdoms – governments or states in modern language – are operated under the authority c.q. sovereignty of the Pope as the mediator between We, The People and God. So, in order to claim the freedom of all people on the planet, you, most of all, have to circumvent the (ultimate) authority of the Pope, which is a mere mediator between us and God. And, ultimately, the supposed authority of the Pope is a self-appointed authority, which is based on a falsification, the Donation of Constantine.

The way I see it, the OPPT, at its very core, invalidated the authority of the Pope and, thus, by extension, of the whole Roman type Civil Law system. It claims that we, as a people, have no one to answer to but ourselves and the creator, and are essentially bound to common law, which is exactly the jurisdiction under which, not only the United States, but also the (former) Dutch Batavian and French Republics have been founded, even though the latter two have been overthrown by the defeat of Napoleon. Interestingly, the legal entity “Batavian Republic” still exists. It has essentially been occupied by a foreign entity, the Kingdom of The Netherlands, which derives its authority from the “holy and undivided trinity”, a.k.a. “the Vatican” and/or “The Pope”.

So, IMHO, the OPPT is essentially a global declaration of independence and a bill of rights. And since the declarations by the above-mentioned republics were legally valid, I see no reason why this one would not be legally valid. Yes, these republics filed their declarations in a different way, basically by publishing it and/or noticing their previous ruler which would be some king, but that does not mean that the way the OPPT published their declaration is invalid.

Now, of course, no one asked for your permission when founding any of the above-mentioned republics. However, none of these take away anything from you, especially regarding your rights. All they do is declare you to be free and answerable only to the creator. What you do with those rights is totally up to you.

In other words, the whole thing is most of all an idea. And the idea is that all people are created equal and free.

And I believe this is going to work, if only because of what Vicor Hugo said, “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come.”

Arend Lammertink on 03/08/2013 at 2:05 PM said:

http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/index.shtml

“human rights should be protected by the rule of law”

Civil, Roman type law, that is.

“no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.”

to which a person belongs….

So, I BELONG to to a “country or territory”??
“Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.”

rights GRANTED him by the constitution or by law??

Compare this with the Dutch declaration of human rights of 1795, as quoted in my article:

1. All Humans are born with equal Rights and these Natural Rights cannot be taken away from them [i.e., are inalienable].

We are BORN with equal, natural rights. These are not GRANTED by any kind of ruler, be it a constitution, a government or an international body.

THAT is what this (OPPT) is all about. The principle of BEing free instead of having been “granted” our freedom by someone/something that is by definition a ruler; a ruler, which has NO RIGHT to grant us anything which is already ours to begin with. Our BIRTHRIGHTS have been granted to us by our Creator, which indeed is one and the same idea on which the United States has been founded.

And, thus, it is indeed nothing new. All that happened is that this idea has been re-worded and re-claimed within a new document and under a new legal entity (UCC) which did not exist in the 1700′s.

Rhode Island Records Show Inner Workings of Legion of Christ
By MICHELLE R. SMITH and NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press
Feb 15, 2013, 5:07 PM

Documents detailing the dubious fundraising practices of a disgraced Roman Catholic religious order called the Legion of Christ were released to the public Friday, showing how the organization took control of an elderly woman's finances and persuaded her to bequeath it $60 million.

The records include the first-ever depositions of high-ranking Legion officials. They shed light on the inner workings of a secretive congregation placed under Vatican receivership after the Holy See determined that its founder was a spiritual fraud who sexually abused his seminarians and fathered three children with two women.

A Rhode Island Superior Court judge said last year that the documents raised a red flag because a steadfastly spiritual elderly woman transferred millions to "clandestinely dubious religious leaders." But they had been kept under seal until The Associated Press, The New York Times, the National Catholic Reporter and The Providence Journal intervened, arguing that they were in the public interest.

Pope Benedict XVI took over the Legion in 2010 after a Vatican investigation determined that its founder, the late Rev. Marcial Maciel, had lived a double life. The pope ordered a wholesale reform of the order and named a papal delegate to oversee it.

The Legion scandal is significant because it shows how the Holy See willfully ignored credible allegations of abuse against Maciel for decades, all while holding him up as a model of sainthood for the faithful because he brought in money and vocations to the priesthood. The scandal, which has tarnished the legacy of Pope John Paul II, is the most egregious example of how the Vatican ignored decades of reports about sexually abusive priests because church leaders put the interests of the institution above those of the victims.

Roman Church admits the Pope’s Guilt: Joseph Ratzinger to Evade Justice and Hide out in the Vatican for his own legal immunity and “protection”

Roman Church admits the Pope’s Guilt: Joseph Ratzinger to Evade Justice and Hide out in the Vatican for his own legal immunity and “protection”

An Urgent Update from the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS) – Brussels

Rome:

In a statement to Reuters today, Vatican officials announced that Joseph Ratzinger will remain a permanent resident of Vatican City after his resignation. Doing so will offer him legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world, Church sources said today

"His continued presence in the Vatican is necessary, otherwise he might be defenseless".

This startling admission of guilt by the church is also a direct obstruction of justice, and lends more weight to the charge by the ITCCS and others that the Vatican has arranged with the Italian government to shield Ratzinger from criminal prosecution, in violation of international laws ratified by Italy.

Commentary:

The Vatican decided today to give permanent sanctuary to a proven war criminal by allowing Joseph Ratzinger to obstruct justice and evade prosecution for crimes against humanity. And the government of Italy is colluding in this abrogation of international law.

This decision validates our claims about the criminal conspiracy surrounding Ratzinger and his Vatican co-conspirators. It also makes it clear that the Vatican is a rogue power that is flaunting every law to conceal its own criminality.

In response, the ITCCS calls upon its affiliates and all people of conscience to use our upcoming Easter Reclamation Campaign to converge on Rome and the Vatican to force the extradition of Ratzinger from Vatican City, and place him and his accessories on trial for crimes against humanity.

Commencing Sunday, March 24, 2013, our activists and others will begin an escalating series of Catholic church occupations and seizures of church property to bring about Ratzinger's extradition and reclaim stolen wealth from the criminal corporation known as Vatican Inc. – in the name of the legion of their victims, both living and dead.

.. and from Kevin Annett – The Rat Scurries Back to Vat!

Those whom the gods destroy, they first drive insane. Especially, it seems, in Rome.

Why would the oldest and wealthiest institution on our planet deliberately prove what its critics say about it, by first tossing their leader, a proven crook, out of his office after he's threatened with arrest, and then giving him shelter to avoid prosecution? That's the kind of panic and illogic displayed by a junior document-shredder, not a credible or wise body of men.

And that gives all of us hope.

Rome's incredible admission that they can't have the Pope stand trial has strengthened our cause and legitimacy enormously,  proving that no matter how big is your guilty opponent, provoking him for long enough will cause him to destroy himself by his own fear and stupidity.

Protecting Ratzinger within the walls of the Vatican may halt justice for a moment, but it violates a basic rule of warfare, which is to never give your enemy a permanent focus for their attack. Ratzinger, the evil Emperor, now a permanent fixture in the Vatican? The absurdity of offering such an ongoing focus to the civilized world's hatred of catholic criminality is also a sign that the church is adrift and improvising. But it also shows how genuinely worried is the Vtaican about the legal offensive mounted by our affiliates, lawyers for torture survivors, and the International Criminal Court.

The Vatican is pulling out all stops to keep Ratzinger out of court. Their loyal, one-man owned Italian media is assaulting the crap out of yours truly and our ITCCS these days, playing the "Deny, Distract and Discredit" strategy of any damage-controlling corporation.

Tottering Liz Windsor, aka Queen of England, is making a special and unprecedented trip to Rome on March 6 to kiss the ring, or other parts, of the new CEO of Vatican Inc. And Italian President Napolitano is meeting with President Obama today in Washington to undoubtedly line up more American backing for the Pontiff – not that Obama needs much encouraging, having stood loyally behind Ratzinger's claim of "diplomatic immunity".

But all to no avail, ultimately. When the Bloody Emperor stands naked, only our illusions keeps him protected and immune from the final accounting that is coming.

The tornado that followed my first exorcism outside the Vatican in 2009, and the lightning that struck it on the day of Benedict's resignation, were not accidental. Joe Ratzinger should know from the history of his own former SS buddies that criminal institutions can run, but they can't hide – even behind all the wealth and pomp in the world.

Benjamin Fulford: Queen Beatrix quits, the Rockefellers flee, the Bushes are rats in a trap; Queen Elizabeth, the Pope and the Rothschilds are still standing

Queen Beatrix quits, the Rockefellers flee, the Bushes are rats in a trap; Queen Elizabeth, the Pope and the Rothschilds are still standing

Benjamin Fulford

February 5, 2013

The announcement last week that Queen “Bilderberg” Beatrix of the Netherlands was abdicating the throne is but a visible sign of some fundamental changes in the secret power structure of the West. In a yet to be publicly confirmed move, David and J. Rockefeller have fled to an Island near Fiji, according to a CIA source. The Bush family, for its part, tried to flee via an airport in Arkansas but were prevented from doing so by the FBI, the same source says.

This source, who correctly predicted the resignation of Queen Beatrix is also saying that Queen Elizabeth will resign in favour of her grandson in the near future.

These moves are all connected to the ongoing counter-attack against the genocidal Western elitists affiliated with the Bilderberg group, the Council on Foreign Relations and other related organizations. As will be described below, there is a lot more to come.

Also, at the time of this writing Lord James Sassoon has not responded to a hand-written letter delivered to him last week at the House of Lords in England asking for comment on the allegations that he bribed 82 politicians (actually paid actors) affiliated with Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

There are also plenty of indications of escalating infighting within the financial elite. The SWIFT international banking transfer system, for example, is becoming dysfunctional because large money transfers are being intercepted and diverted to unknown destinations before the intended recipients get their money, according to both MI5 and CIA sources. “The SWIFT system has several operational and procedural features that allow anyone with big computing power, i.e. cabal controlled bank servers, to spot and arrest large transactions, especially over $50 million,” the MI5 source says. “SWIFT has in the past been temporarily disabled to allow Bush 41 to steal large transactions,” he adds. The lack of trust between different cabal factions has meant that opposing factions have been regularly hijacking each other’s bank transfers, the CIA source corroborates.

How the Vatican built a secret property empire using Mussolini's millions

Few passing London tourists would ever guess that the premises of Bulgari, the upmarket jewellers in New Bond Street, had anything to do with the pope. Nor indeed the nearby headquarters of the wealthy investment bank Altium Capital, on the corner of St James's Square and Pall Mall. But these office blocks in one of London's most expensive districts are part of a surprising secret commercial property empire owned by the Vatican.

Behind a disguised offshore company structure, the church's international portfolio has been built up over the years, using cash originally handed over by Mussolini in return for papal recognition of the Italian fascist regime in 1929.

Benjamin Fulford: Reader Comment on South Africa

01/11/2013

Posted by Benjamin Fulford at: http://goo.gl/sFHlE

To readers, here are some good links on the situation in South Africa and elsewhere that are worth taking a look at.

Hi Ben,

Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu
In your recent report ( January 8th 2013) you mention Mandela. Wonderful idea, however I am afraid that all that we have is a legend. The dear man is very old now . As a result he is very protected and no longer makes public appearances, but remains in the safety and care of his family.

As an alternative suggestion, might I propose the name of Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. Although also rapidly advancing in age, his mind is still as sharp, many have always thought too sharp, as a whistle :) His experience with the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission can only be of great benefit to all. And last year he called for the arrest of Tony Blair as a war criminal! He did my heart so proud.

Tony Blair should face trial over Iraq war, says Desmond Tutu. Anti-apartheid hero attacks former prime minister over 'double standards on war crimes'

While all turns topsy turvy all over the world, South Africa has also had it's fair share of drama. We still have a very pro Nazi contingent here, the Boer having to his detriment supported Hitler all along, for no other reason than they hate the British with a passion and are strong holocaust deniers.

As one example take Stephen Goodson, although he  was on the button regarding Libya and a few other issues, his wanting an increase in payout for shares, his views on the death camps in Europe during WW2, and his blatant pro Nazi fascist views were embarrassing to say the least!

South Africa – Reserve Bank’s Holocaust Denier:

Many Afrikaners, in fact most were and still are  unaware of the deep Nazi connection with the Jesuits and the Vatican. And so although vehement Protestants , especially taking the French Huguenot heritage into account,  have inadvertently made a pact with the devil. The CIA, Nazi, Jesuit Vatican connection has yet to be fully recorded in the Main Stream Media and history books. Here is an excellent article on that score:

Updated: Vatican Is 'Cash Only' As Bank Of Italy Blocks Electronic Payments Over Money Laundering Concerns

Vatican Is 'Cash Only' As Bank Of Italy Blocks Electronic Payments Over Money Laundering Concerns
By FRANCES D'EMILIO 01/03/13 01:59 PM ET EST

VATICAN CITY -- It's "cash only" now for tourists at the Vatican wanting to pay for museum tickets, souvenirs and other services after Italy's central bank decided to block electronic payments, including credit cards, at the tiny city-state.

Deutsche Bank Italia, which for some 15 years had provided the Vatican with electronic payment services, said Thursday that the Bank of Italy had pulled its authorization after Dec. 31.

The Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that the Italian central bank took the action because the Holy See has not yet fully complied with European Union safeguards against money laundering. That means Italian banks are not authorized to operate within the Vatican, which is in the process of improving its mechanisms to combat laundering.

The Vatican says it is scrambling to solve the problem for thousands of visitors who flock to its very popular Vatican Museums, which include highlights like the Sistine Chapel. The Holy See had no immediate comment on the Bank of Italy's reported reasons.

Tourists in the long lines Thursday that snaked around Vatican City walls were not happy about the inconvenience.

"It's certainly a disadvantage," said Giuseppe Amoruso, an Italian. "Credit cards provide a useful service, which needs to be accessible to everybody, everywhere."

"A lot of tourists don't have cash on them, so they have to get euros and don't know where to get them," said Fluger William Hunter, an American tourist.

The central bank said a routine inspection found that Deutsche Bank Italia hadn't sought authorization when it first started providing services at the Vatican. When it finally did, the Bank of Italy turned it down because the Vatican's banking norms, including measures to combat money laundering, didn't meet Italy's more stringent criteria of recent years, a central bank official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because there was no official statement on the case.

The Vatican has been striving to upgrade its measures to detect and discourage money laundering, hiring a Swiss expert just a few months ago. Last summer, the Holy See passed a key European financial transparency test but received failing grades for its financial watchdog agency and its bank, formally called the Institute for Religious Works.

The museums, with their entrance fees and popular souvenir shops, are a big money-maker for the Vatican. Other Vatican attractions, such as tours of the Vatican's ancient underground spaces, also charge admission.

Mobster's Body Exhumed from Vatican Site in Search for Teen Who Vanished

Police technicians are seen working at the church of Sant'Apollinare in central Rome, where a mobster's body was exhumed.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
The body of mobster Enrico "Renatino" De Pedis was moved to a Rome basilica in the 1990s. Teen Emanuela Orlandi disappeared in 1983. An anonymous caller and his former mistress have linked De Pedis to the disappearance De Pedis will not be reburied at the site

The Pharisee and the Publican - mural Sant' Apollinare
Rome (CNN) -- The body of a mobster buried among cardinals and bishops on a Vatican property has been exhumed in an investigation into a teenage girl's disappearance.

Investigators at the church of Sant'Apollinare in central Rome opened the tomb of Enrico "Renatino" De Pedis on Monday in the search for clues about what happened to Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a prominent Vatican employee.

The 15-year-old vanished without a trace after leaving her Vatican apartment for music lessons on the afternoon of June 22, 1983.

The mystery has captivated people throughout Italy and triggered numerous conspiracy theories.
In the crypt, in addition to De Pedis' body, investigators found dozens of boxes of human bones, which they are testing.

At the time of Emanuela's disappearance nearly 30 years ago, a witness reported seeing a girl who fit her description getting into a dark green BMW near the music school, which was adjacent to the Sant'Apollinare church. That lead was never corroborated.

Pope John Paul II speaks with
Mehmet Ali  Agca
In 1981, two years before the girl's disappearance, Turkish national Mehmet Ali Agca shot Pope John Paul II. In the days after Emanuela disappeared, her parents received anonymous phone calls from someone promising the safe return of their daughter if the Vatican released Agca.

Meanwhile, an anonymous caller told police that Emanuela was kidnapped to keep her father, Ercole Orlandi, quiet. That caller said Ercole Orlandi had stumbled upon sensitive documents that tied banker Roberto Calvi to an organized crime syndicate. Calvi was known as "God's banker" for his close association with both the Holy See and its primary banking facility, Banco Ambrosiano.

Orlandi worked in the Vatican's special events office that organizes papal functions and Catholic celebrations. Calvi was found hanged in London in 1982. Speculation turned from suicide to homicide in that case. The tipster to police in Italy said Orlandi's daughter was nabbed to ensure her father's silence. Ercole Orlandi died in 2004.

In 2005, another anonymous call to an Italian detective said Emanuela was kidnapped on the orders of the then-vicar of Rome, Cardinal Ugo Poletti, and that "the secret to the mystery lies in a tomb in Sant'Apollinare basilica" -- specifically De Pedis' tomb.

De Pedis was gunned down in Rome in 1990 and his body was moved to the basilica some time before 1997, presumably either as part of a secret deal for a massive loan De Pedis made to the Vatican or to protect his tomb from being desecrated by rival gang members.

In 2008, De Pedis' mistress said he was involved in Emanuela's kidnapping and that the girl was buried under the foundation of a house outside of Rome. Investigators searched that house but found that the concrete foundation was poured the year before the girl's disappearance and could not have been connected to the crime.

The Vatican has distanced itself from the Orlandi controversy.

In a three-page letter broadcast on RAI television, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said he asked Vatican cardinals whether the Vatican's failure to collaborate in the original kidnapping probe was "normal and justifiable affirmation of Vatican sovereignty, or if in fact circumstances were withheld that might have helped clear something up."

The Vatican cooperated immediately with the exhumation.

Enric De Pedris - Italian Crime Boss
After opening the tomb Monday, investigators found De Pedis' body so well preserved that scientific police were able to confirm his identity through fingerprints. Also inside the crypt were the boxes of bones, according to investigators on the scene.

The church has been used for burials for two centuries. Still, all of the bones will be tested to determine whether they are tied to De Pedis or to Emanuela's disappearance.

De Pedis will not be reburied in the church, the Vatican said.

De Pedis family lawyer Lorenzo Radogna said the remains will either be cremated or reinterred in a public cemetery in Rome.

The Vatican is facing a deepening controversy over the burial 22 years ago of a notorious crime boss, with reports emerging that the church accepted a one billion lire (£407,000) payment from the mobster's widow to allow his interment in a basilica.

A source at the Holy See told the Ansa news agency that "despite initial reluctance" the then vicar-general of Rome, Cardinal Ugo Poletti, "in the face of such a conspicuous sum, gave his blessing" to the controversial interment of Enrico De Pedis, the former boss of Rome's notorious Magliana gang. The money was reportedly used on missions and to restore the Basilica of St Apollinare, where the mobster was laid to rest next to popes and cardinals after his death in 1990.
